Did you choose the right silencer but install it in the wrong place?

Circular Silencers, Bends and Pressure Drops: How One Installation Detail Can Make a Difference in Ventilation Systems

Is a correctly sized silencer enough to guarantee the performance specified in the design?

Not always. In ventilation systems, performance depends not only on which component is selected, but also on how it is integrated into the ductwork.

This is particularly important in large infrastructures, such as road tunnels and underground railway systems, where ventilation systems must meet specific operational and noise control requirements.

🔍 The Detail That Can Affect Performance

Imagine a circular silencer installed in a duct, with a bend immediately upstream or downstream.

A compact configuration may seem like the simplest solution when space is limited. However, a bend or transition installed too close to the silencer can create non-uniform airflow and affect the system’s pressure losses.

⚠️ The result? The actual pressure drop may be higher than expected based solely on the component’s performance data, measured under test conditions.

This aspect is also addressed in ASHRAE technical guidance on noise and vibration control in HVAC systems.

✅ Three Checks to Make Before Installation

📐 1. Check the Available Space

It is not enough to verify that the silencer physically fits inside the ductwork. It is also essential to assess the presence of bends, reductions, expansions and other components in the immediate vicinity.

🌬️ 2. Consider the Pressure Drop of the Entire Configuration

The performance data of an individual component must be evaluated in relation to the airflow rate, air velocity and expected installation conditions.

🔊 3. Evaluate the Overall Acoustic Performance

The silencer helps attenuate noise travelling through the ductwork, but the final acoustic performance also depends on the noise source, the sound transmission path and other characteristics of the ventilation system.

⚙️ A Silencer Does Not Work in Isolation

When selecting a circular silencer, acoustic attenuation and aerodynamic performance must be evaluated together.

The component’s geometry, airflow conditions and installation position all contribute to the final result.

For designers and installers, considering these factors from the earliest project stages helps reduce the risk of subsequent modifications and ensures that the ductwork is designed consistently with the required performance targets.

💡 The key question, therefore, is not simply:

“Which silencer should I choose?”

But also:

“Under what conditions will it operate?”

This is where a more informed approach to acoustic design begins.
